The Old Woman and Her Pig

An old woman was sweeping her house when she found a little penny.

She went to market and bought a little pig.

On the way home they came to a stile. The pig sat down and would not go over.

“Piggy, piggy, get over the stile, or I shall not get home tonight,” she said.

She asked a dog for help. The dog said no.

She asked a cat for help. The cat said, “Give me a saucer of milk, and I will ask the dog.”

She asked a cow for milk. The cow said, “Give me a handful of hay, and I will.”

She found hay by the stack, and she gave it to the cow.

The cow gave her milk, and she gave the milk to the cat.

Then the cat asked the dog, and the dog asked the pig.

The little pig jumped over the stile.

And the old woman and her pig got home that night.

And that is the moral of our story: a little kindness can start a chain of help.
