TRADITIONAL STORY

Stone Soup

Open the page-turning reader →Watch on YouTube
The traveller shows a smooth stone to the cook inside her cottage.

A hungry traveller came to a quiet village, carrying only a smooth stone.

Please may I boil my stone in your pot?

The pot is empty. We have no soup today.

01

The cook stands beside the pot on the cottage stove.

A stone can start a soup. May I try?

The cook set the pot on the fire, and in went the stone.

02

A neighbour adds a carrot to the pot.

It smells nearly ready. It only needs a carrot.

I have a carrot. In it goes.

03

A neighbour holds a potato over the pot.

A potato would make it even nicer.

I have a potato. In it goes.

04

A neighbour brings bread to share beside the pot.

A little bread would make a feast.

I have bread. We can all share.

05

The traveller, cook and neighbours sit together with bowls around the soup pot.

They sat down together and ate from the pot.

And that is the moral of our story: a little sharing can fill a pot.
